“Catch!!” Grant Meryz, son of the head groom, grunted as the rambunctious month-old Thoroughbred spun about on his haunches, playfully flicked out his forelegs and then proceeded to pull with all his might in the opposite direction.

The lead-rein went taunt and Catch was pulled around by the force, his little green halter suddenly looking a lot less new than it really was and he squealed, bucking up in one huge arch.

Fancy stood about a length away from her son, watching with what looked like a small smile on her muzzle, eyes drooped affectionately towards her first-born. Sometimes the grooms really thought she was proud of his behaviour. Although, there was little more than they could’ve expected, seeing as the colt’s father was the one and only Catcher in the Rye from Double Dance. I had been such a privilege that the prestigious stables had allowed BS to send Fancy up to them for a covering – although they hadn’t been quite ready for what they found when they got there.

They had heard the stories of the stallion, how he had had a horrible accident on the track which led to a fractured leg; how he was known for biting arms, shoulders, legs, ribs, elbows, etcetera, yet everyone was utterly unprepared for the entrance they got from the stallion when he first appeared.

He was pulling the young groom across the pasture by the lead rein, kicking up his legs in all possible directions, squealing and snorting incessantly, before stopping completely, staring bewildered at the dark chestnut mare he was presented with.

The chestnut’s display went on for a good ten minutes before he was calmed down enough to be let loose, all the action is written down with the picture we took of him and Fancy.

Anyway, after 11 long months of peace, the relative quiet that was usual around BS was shattered by the triumphant whinny of a foal that had just entered the world and managed to stand up on his own.

It was unexpected to say the least, usually we notice when a mare’s close to foaling, yet Fancy had us all thinking she had at least a week left before our little bundle would be presented to us. Nevertheless, we all rushed in, towels, hot water, and the vet on hand, but the little guy was already wobbling around, looking quite determined to do everything on his own.

So we all just stood there, admiring the little guy as he toppled about, falling about three times before Fancy finally decided he needed a little help and started nosing the little guy about, it was truly the sweetest thing we have all seen. She stood there, staring at him softly for a while, then, as she saw him fall a third time, looked down at her son, snorted quietly, and licked his ears softly. Catch decided to start squealing in protest and somehow managed to awkwardly get to his hooves again, before he gave in and let Fancy nose him all over, cleaning him up until his little fluffy foal-coat was standing on end and she pushed him towards the sweet scent of food.

And he’s been going from strength to strength from then, all the time gaining an real attitude, although thankfully he’s not nearly as bad as he Dad can be – only a few squeals here, a few pulled ropes there and... eh... a good few of us scared witless when he suddenly neighs out and will sometimes go up on his hind legs as far as he can, then manage to topple backwards onto the ground.

The worst part is he’ll lie there, completely still, until we come up to him, at which point he’ll jiggle about and do his upmost to get to his hooves before we could help him.

Oh, he’s going to be an interesting one in the future.

Temperament : An absolute maniac since he always seems to have too much energy – I mean, seriously, he doesn’t calm down! However, he does have good manners and is very sweet, yet not as much as his mother and doesn’t seem to like it when he’s standing there with one of us hugging him cause he’s just too damn cute. Luckily, Holden’s streak of kicking and biting hasn’t rubbed off on this little guy and he’s perfectly well-behaved about 90% of the time (the other 10% is when he’s messing about with his favorite game of ‘who can I run away from and look like I’m scared of?’ He’s found that he has a talent of walking all calm-like down towards the pasture next to Fancy, then suddenly whirling around, jumping on the spot, eyes a-rolling, ears a-prickin’ and then bolt off in some random direction. I swear I’ve heard him laughing about it! Nevertheless, he does seem to have a real buck in him – yet we don’t know whether this will be a problem when we ride him in a few years
